System Requirements
Computer: Macintosh LC III or higher, 68030 CPU, 25 MHz or faster
Operating System: Macintosh Operating System 7.1 or higher
Memory: 4 MB RAM (in addition to RAM used by system)
Hard Disk: 6 MB free hard disk space
Video: 13-inch or larger color monitor & computer capable of displaying at least 256 colors
CD-ROM Drive: 300 KB/sec or higher transfer rate for optimal video playback
Supporting Software: QuickTime 2.0 (supplied with product)
Installation Instructions
*Note*
The Survive Installer automatically installs QuickTime 2.0 into your Extensions folder. If you already have a copy of QuickTime in your Extensions folder (located in the System folder on the hard drive), you will want to remove it before installing How Would You Survive?. For further instructions, please see the QuickTime Installation and Removal section (below).
1. Insert the How Would You Survive? CD (label side up) in your CD-ROM drive.
2. Double-click the How Would You Survive? icon to open it.
3. Double-click the Survive Installer.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install How Would You Survive?.
5. To start the application, open the Grolier Kids folder on your hard drive and double-click the How Would You Survive? application file.
QuickTime Installation and Removal
The Survive Installer automatically installs QuickTime 2.0 into the Extensions folder (located in the System folder on the hard drive). If you already have a copy of QuickTime (2.0 or earlier), you will need to remove it from the Extensions folder before installing How Would You Survive?.
To do this:
1. Open the hard drive.
2. Open the System Folder on the hard drive.
3. Open the Extensions Folder.
4. Look in the Extensions Folder for QuickTime.
5. Check the version number of each copy of QuickTime. To do this, click just once on the icon for QuickTime to highlight it then go to File and Get Info. The version number will be shown near the bottom of the Info window.
6. You will want to remove any copies of QuickTime that are version 2.0 or earlier. Place QuickTime in the trash or create a new folder on the hard drive (not in the System folder) and put QuickTime in that folder.
7. Restart the machine.
8. Install How Would You Survive?.
*Quicktime 2.1 Users
If you have QuickTime 2.1 installed, it is recommended that you keep it instead of replacing it with version 2.0 on the How Would You Survive? CD.
To install How Would You Survive? and keep QuickTime 2.1:
1. Drag QuickTime 2.1 out of the Extensions folder (located in the System folder on the hard drive) to the desktop.
2. Install How Would You Survive?.
3. Drag QuickTime and Apple Multimedia Tuner files to the Trash.
4. Drag QuickTime 2.1 back into the Extensions folder.
5. Restart the machine.
6. Empty the trash.
Game Playing Tips
How Have You Survived?
1. If you would like to play the game a little quicker and do not want to go to the subject screens to find the answer, you can use the SHIFT key option. Hold the SHIFT key down and click on the tile of the question(s) you answered incorrectly and you will get a second chance.
Troubleshooting
General
We don't anticipate you will have any problems using this CD-ROM. However, you should check the following if an error does occur:
1. Verify that the correct CD-ROM is in the CD-ROM drive. You cannot use How Would You Survive? unless the CD-ROM is in the CD-ROM drive.
2. Verify that your equipment meets or exceeds the system requirements stated above.
3. Ensure that you are not running any other applications in the background.
4. Try trashing the Grolier Kids folder and re-installing the product.
5. Verify that you are giving 3500KB of RAM to the application.
You can check this by clicking just once on the How Would You Survive? application icon, then selecting Get Info from the File menu. In the lower right corner of the Get Info window, you will see a section labeled Memory Requirements. The value for the minimum amount of RAM should be no lower than 3500KB for the application to operate properly.
6. Disable all extensions except for your CD-ROM driver and QuickTime. Power Mac users will also need to leave the QuickTime Power Plug enabled. Try running the program. If it runs fine with just these inits enabled, then you are having an extension conflict. Use a process of elimination to determine which extension(s) are conflicting with How Would You Survive?.
Sound Problems
If you are having problems with sound, try turning Virtual Memory off. To do this:
1. Go to the Apple then to Control Panels then to Memory.
2. Turn Virtual Memory off.
3. Restart the machine.
"QuickTime installation failed because it was already installed"
If you are getting this error message when you start your machine, check to be sure you have only one copy of QuickTime in your extensions folder.
1. Open the hard drive.
2. Open the System Folder on your hard drive.
3. Open the Extensions Folder.
4. Look in the Extensions Folder for more than one copy of QuickTime.
5. Check the version number of each copy of QuickTime. To do this, click just once on the icon for QuickTime to highlight it then go to File and Get Info. The version number will be shown near the bottom of the Info window.
6. You will want to keep one copy of QuickTime version 2.0 or 2.1 and trash all others. Place the other QuickTime files, including any duplicate Apple Multimedia Tuner files into the Trash. Otherwise create a new folder on the hard drive (not in the Systems folder) and drag QuickTime file(s) to the new folder. Restart the computer. Once the computer is restarted, you may empty your Trash.
"Unimplemented Trap" Error
If you are getting this error message when trying to start the program, check to be sure you have installed QuickTime 2.0 in the Extensions Folder located in the System Folder on the hard drive.
